Monday Afternoon Ramblings

This post is for all the cowboys who think that driving carefully on snowy/icy/slushy roads is an affront to your manhood.  First, yes, your SUV/pickup/Jeep may have 4WD, but that only helps out in a straight line moving forward.  It offers no real assistance with turning or stopping.  The reason everyone else on the road has slowed down is because we understand this basic fact of physics.  Second, if your sense of manhood is so frail as to be wounded by demonstrating common sense, you have much smaller issues than the speed you’re driving, if you catch my drift.

Also, when there’s snow/sleet falling and visibility is greatly diminished, don’t bother tailgating me in some moronic attempt to make me speed up.  I’m smart enough to know that if I can’t see, I can’t drive fast, and none of your hyper-macho stupidity will change that.  You are the problem, and you are the one who will cause the vast majority of traffic fatalities, not me.  So take a deep breath, lean back in your seat, and slow the hell down.  This isn’t a NASCAR sanctioned event, and you aren’t Jr.  If it were a NASCAR race, they’d cancel it because the track would be too treacherous for racing.  Because they’re smart.

Okay, enough venting for now.  I need to live far away from people.

Sunday Afternoon Ramblings

After the most grueling semester of my career, I desperately needed the break.  However, because of that crazy illness and then the week with my sons, I ended up only getting a couple of days to relax and rest.  We start back to work tomorrow, and I’m about as far from ready as I can be.  I’ve got until Thursday before I’ll be in class, so maybe I can get a jump on my prep and be somewhat prepared going in.

I’m so ready for a change.  I really can’t see myself doing this for much longer.  The toll is too great and the return is too little.  Yes, I chose this as my career, so I’m as much to blame for my situation as anyone, but I think most teachers would agree with me that we are called to this profession by a deeply rooted need to give back to our communities.  I didn’t expect to spend 13 years doing this.  I thought maybe 5-7, but here I am, exhausted and overwhelmed from the relentless wave of grading poorly written essays by apathetic students who would rather be surfing YouTube than listening to class notes.

I don’t mean to be negative, and I’m sorry for complaining, but I feel so defeated by this job.  I have to get the farm moving forward.  The illness and the weather kept me from making any progress over break, so I have get some momentum back soon.  My health and my sanity need to make this change happen, and the sooner the better.

Friday Morning Ramblings

In racing terms, I’m rounding out of turn four and can see the finish line.  The good news is that the bad weather allowed me to rest a little and kind of shake this cold, although I don’t feel 100%.  The bad news is that the weather has pushed everything to today, so I haven’t gotten to get a jump start  on the grading before the weekend.  With grades due Monday, that means quite a bit of work this weekend and Monday morning.  However, once grades are turned in, I’m taking a break and relaxing a little.  I’m exhausted from this grind and need o recharge my batteries a little before the spring semester starts.

I get the boys the 29th-4th, so that will help reinvigorate me.  Last night, Collin gave me a list of all the things he wants for his birthday, which is in February.  He hasn’t even gotten through Christmas but is already planning for his birthday.  He’s a funny kid.  That’s all for today.  Now, back to the chaos the weather has created this week.
