Tuesday Morning Ramblings

Here’s an update on the farm:  We’ve stopped focusing on clearing land for the time being to work on cleaning out and renovating the building.  Since the farm will specialize in hydroponic production for the vegetables, the building will be the hub of operations.  We’ve made great progress so far and should have electricity back on in the next few weeks.

The goal right now is to get the first hydro unit purchased and installed by the end of this year and do a couple of test crops before spring.  More than likely we’ll start with tomatoes and cucumbers, but we’ll see what is in strongest demand before committing to anything.  Once we see how well the production is, we’ll look into expanding the number of units throughout the spring.

Also, we’re working on the solar panel installation.  If all goes well, we may have that side up and running before too long.  I’m very excited about the possibilities with that.  The start-up costs are tremendous, but long-term, the units pay for themselves within a three to five years.  Also, for the long-term sustainability of an organic farm, renewable energy is a must.

So that’s a more detailed update of what’s going on.

Monday Evening Ramblings

Life has really gone into warp drive these last few months.  Working on the farm has consumed a lot of time and teaching dual enrollment is like a time black hole.  But I’m happy, happier than I’ve been since Collin was born.  My life has purpose and direction once again, and I’m okay with who I am and what I’ve been through.  I won’t go far as to say that I’m on my feet, but I’m getting closer.

I’m gonna get the last few pages of book three hammered out before we get too deep into the semester, and then Phillip will help me spit and polish it into shape.

So that’s a brief update.  I may not get to blog often this semester because of my schedule, but I’ll try.  Until next time…

Wednesday Morning Ramblings

Well, I had a great trip with the boys.  We spent the first week in Morristown and visited with family.  All three of the grandparents hadn’t seen them in over a year, so it was good for them to reconnect.  Then, we went to Chattanooga and stayed at the Choo Choo, which is one of my favorite places.  The ambiance of the old train station is special.  While there, we went to the Tennessee Aquarium and Imax, and if you haven’t been yet, you need to make the trip.  It’s an amazing experience.

After that, we went to Fontana Lake and spent three nights at the Fontana Village Resort.  It’s a pretty nice place and offers a lot for a family to take advantage of.  My only complaint was that the area has become a mecca of sorts for motorcycle enthusiasts, so I had to put up with a lot of posers.  On the other hand, I also got to meet a handful of very cool people who live the life, so in the end, it all balanced out.  The resort is well worth the money, and I’ll probably go back fairly soon.

Now, I’m trying to get back into something of a regular routine.  Dual enrollment has started back, so I’m already in the classroom, and I still need to finish the last few pages of book three, but overall, life is good.  I’ll write more soon.
