Tuesday Morning Ramblings

Never let facts get in the way of a good hate.  Nevermind that all indicators point to the fact that under the current administration’s leadership, the recovery from the Bush Era Recession has been faster and stronger than the recover from the recessions of 1991 and 2001.  Nevermind that after a couple of years of losing hundreds of thousands of jobs a month the economy has been creating jobs again for the last few months.  Nevermind that things in this country are slowly moving in the right direction.  The people who hate President Obama are going to hate him no matter what the facts are.

And even though many of those same people often let the N-word fly when they mention black people, their disdain for the president has nothing to do with his race.  And even though many still cling to the same tired, dis-proven campaign smears about his citizenship, his religion, and his patriotism, in their minds their hate is perfectly rational because the deficit has grown.  Nevermind that during the previous administration’s two terms the deficit grew by record increases year after year after year.  They weren’t steeping in the streets because that president was “one of them,” even though his father is an oil billionaire and a political insider.  He sure sounded and looked like them.

After 9/11, President Bush had a 90% approval rating because many of us who disagreed with his politics set aside our partisanship and backed our leader.  By the end of his second term that approval had fallen to 27% because of his incompetence, not because of blind obstructionism.  The opposition to our current president cannot claim any form of objectivity.  There is nothing, and I mean nothing, President Obama could do to sway those people that he is doing a good job — no matter that the stock market has increased by 25% since his inauguration, no matter that the housing market is slowly coming back, no matter that the facts say the economy is moving in the right direction.

Hate is hate, and fear is fear, and they will not listen to reason or rational argument.  They need a shit-kicking cowboy who spits backer and don’t take no lip off them lily-livered Commies, not some educated ni…uh…spear-ch…uh…spa…uh…socialist.

Tuesday Morning Ramblings

For my friends who I’ve offended recently, and that’s a pretty long list, this post is to clarify a few things about my reasons for mocking regressive thinking.  Not too long ago, there was a page circulating on Facebook praying to God for President Obama’s death.  Recently, while driving, I saw a bumper sticker that read “Save a Miner: Kill a Tree Hugger.”  On the surface, many of you may think that these are just harmless little jokes and that the people forwarding the page and the redneck driving the Super Duty Ford Truck didn’t really mean it, but to me, these are symptoms of a much problem with regressive thinking.

In July 2008, a conservative walked into a Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, TN and opened fire on the congregation.  Two died and seven were injured.  His reason for attacking was that they were liberals, and in his home were books by Michael Savage, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity, all written along the lines of how liberalism is a mental disease that needs to be cured.  What scares me most is that often people with this mentality believe that anyone who doesn’t think just like them or believe everything they believe must be a liberal.  That kind of black and white, simplified thinking is what led to the Holocaust.

Back to the redneck miner, his mentality is that because he doesn’t know anything about it, all science must be bunk, so instead of him taking the time to learn why certain environmental groups believe that certain mining operations are damaging the environment, he would just rather kill them so he can make his $20 an hour.  Rather than learn a trade like plumbing or carpentry, he wants to work in that mine cause that’s what his daddy and granddaddy did, nevermind that they both died real young from major medical problems.  He needs that $20 and hour to buy fuel for that Super Duty.  That’s real dumb and real scary to someone like me who is curious and likes to take the time to learn a little.

And the mentality is bigger than that.  It has to do with the belief that God is on their side, so it must be okay for them to do whatever they need to do to preserve their beliefs because God ordained them to do so.  Some of the worst atrocities in history have been committed under this belief.  Every single one of the 19 hijackers on September 11 believed that they were serving God’s will by killing the infidels.  Timothy McVeigh believed passionately that he was serving God by blowing up the building in Oklahoma City.  I could go on and on for hours with thousands more examples.

Many of my friends who I’ve offended are people who enjoy a good debate and like to read and have curiosity about the world.  I love and respect you guys even if I disagree with you.  The fact that you look deeper into things shows that you have intelligence and the capacity for rational thought.  Most of you wouldn’t even consider walking into a church with a shotgun or filling a truck with homemade explosives or hijacking a jumbo jet to attack a skyscraper.

But there are many conservatives who embrace violence as the answer.  To them, the commandment “Thou Shalt Not Kill” reads “Thou Shalt Not Kill Unless The Person Disagrees With You Or You Feel Threatened Or You Don’t Like Something About Them.”  These people terrify me, so I mock them in an effort to point out the absurdity and backwardness of their thinking.  I’m sometimes an asshole about it, too, but the reason I’m so passionate about ridiculing the far right is because it’s my feeble attempt to stand up to a very wealthy, very powerful movement that uses lies and propaganda to stir the emotions of people like Jim Adkisson into using force against their enemies.

So

Tea Party Ramblings

In the infinite wisdom of regressive thinking that is the touchstone of conservative ideology, a solution to the runaway inflation of the healthcare system has been found.  Sue Lowden, former Miss America contestant and smartest member of the GOP, proposes that we enact a barter system in which patients can trade goods for medical services.  Curious as to how the industry would react to such a regression, I rushed down to South Carolina to discuss the idea with true professionals.

“Well, I guess we could work out something,” says Dr. Goldlover, a general practitioner and Porsche enthusiast.  “A regular office visit could be exchanged for a wash and wax of my 959 Cabriolet.”

I pressed him about more expensive tests and procedures.

“Hmmm, I would trade a mammogram for 4,872 white or brown chickens.  An appendectomy would fetch 876 heads of cattle or 2,150 pounds of potatoes.  That seems reasonable to me.”

Excited about the doctor’s positive reception of the concept, I then interviewed his receptionist, Bonnie Busybody, graduate of South Carolina State Technical Community College with an Associate’s in Office Administration and local Tea Party member.

“I don’t want no socialized medical system like that spear-chuck…uh…socialist is proposing.  We need a good, old-fashioned barter system like they had in the Biblical days.  People lived to be hundreds of years old back then, so it must’ve worked.”

I proceeded to ask what she thought about women taking a more proactive role in GOP and Tea Party politics.

“I have a lot in common with both Sue Lowden and Sarah Palin.  I was Miss Palmetto Bug three years running, and both of them were beauty queens, too.  Also, all three of my daughters got pregnant as teenagers, so I understand what Mrs. Palin’s going through.”

“How do you feel about sex education in grade school?” I asked.

“Good grief, the last thing we need is to corrupt our young folk with a firm understanding of how the reproductive system works.  That’ll just encourage them to have sex.  Abstinence is the only policy that really works.”

And considering how successful the abstinence policy has been in reducing teenage pregnancy, I suspect the barter system will just as effective at lowering healthcare costs.
