Thursday Afternoon Ramblings

Another update: I’ve recently started running again.  It’s been 18 years since I ran regularly, so getting back into it took a major build-up of courage for me.  I’ve never been a good runner, but the workout is really good for my heart and blood pressure.  After just a couple of weeks, I can already make two 1/3 of a mile laps at the park.  I can’t complete them consecutively yet, so that’s why I didn’t write 2/3 of a mile.  Still, I feel pretty good about my progress in such a short time.

My goal is to get back to 3 miles a day.  That’s what I ran back in the football days, and I feel pretty confident that I can get back to that level.  Also, I would like to make it in thirty minutes.  That’s just a ten minute mile, which isn’t all that fast, so I feel like it’s a realistic goal to start with.  Once I make that, I’ll work on getting the time down.

Running will help me get down to my goal weight and get my blood pressure under control.  It’s also a great stress release, so maybe all the stress of dual enrollment and my overload schedule won’t overwhelm me this semester.  We’ll see.

Wednesday Morning Ramblings

Well, I had a great trip with the boys.  We spent the first week in Morristown and visited with family.  All three of the grandparents hadn’t seen them in over a year, so it was good for them to reconnect.  Then, we went to Chattanooga and stayed at the Choo Choo, which is one of my favorite places.  The ambiance of the old train station is special.  While there, we went to the Tennessee Aquarium and Imax, and if you haven’t been yet, you need to make the trip.  It’s an amazing experience.

After that, we went to Fontana Lake and spent three nights at the Fontana Village Resort.  It’s a pretty nice place and offers a lot for a family to take advantage of.  My only complaint was that the area has become a mecca of sorts for motorcycle enthusiasts, so I had to put up with a lot of posers.  On the other hand, I also got to meet a handful of very cool people who live the life, so in the end, it all balanced out.  The resort is well worth the money, and I’ll probably go back fairly soon.

Now, I’m trying to get back into something of a regular routine.  Dual enrollment has started back, so I’m already in the classroom, and I still need to finish the last few pages of book three, but overall, life is good.  I’ll write more soon.

Monday Morning Ramblings

I started the last chapter of book three last night.  That’s staggering to me.  I’ve finished three other manuscripts, and each one is a unique experience.  When the last line is written, there’s a moment of disbelief quickly followed by a rush of euphoria.  Weeks, months, and in this case years of hard work are finished, and even though there will still be editing and polishing, the framework of the story is complete.  It’s a feeling that I can only compare to the birth of  my children.  Obviously, their births are more profound, but the feeling is similar.

So sometime either this week or after I take the kids back to Jacksonville, I will complete this book, and I will get to experience for the fourth time in my life that sensation of accomplishment.  I have a suspicion that this one will be more special than the others.  I don’t know what the emotions will be specifically, but I’m certain they will be intense and overwhelming.

My hope is that this book is better than the first two.  The overall story has reached its zenith, and I do feel more mature as a writer.  Hopefully, the book is as compelling to my readers as it seems to me, but you can never tell.  Often, when a writer feels really good about a piece, readers don’t have the same connection to it.  That’s why I’m a little leery.  I feel like it’s a strong manuscript, but I’m worried how others will take it.

Stay tuned…
