Monday Afternoon Ramblings

Here’s an update on the farm:  A couple of weeks ago I bought a used drill from a pawn shop, trying to save a few dollars on the construction costs of the prototype.  For my birthday, my father got me the hole cutting blade I needed for the pipes that will hold the plants, so Saturday I started cutting the holes in the 4″ pipe.  The first one cut out fairly easily, but as soon as I started on the second, the drill bit that guides the circular saw snapped in two.  The blade was graded to cut metal, so I was shocked that a plastic pipe broke it.  I ran back to the store and exchanged the blade, hoping that the bit had simply had a bad spot in it.

When I back from the store, I got six holes cut before something in the drill broke, so now, I will have to go back to the store to buy a new drill before I can get anything done.  The lesson in all this?  Don’t try to cut corners to save a couple of bucks.  Just spend a little extra and get something new with a warranty.  If it breaks, like the drill bit, you can exchange it for one that’s not flawed.  Otherwise, you end up with a $10 paperweight.

Overall, though, I’m still on schedule with the prototype.  I feel like it’ll be completed by early January, and then, we can run a couple of test crops to see how well the plants grow and to decide which ones we want to focus on come summer.  I’m excited and feel pretty good about how well things are coming together.

Saturday Afternoon Ramblings – Thankful #6

I’m thankful for Saturdays.  They are the best day of the week.  After a 50+ hour week, Saturdays are my chance to do all the things I want to do, like working on the farm or doing yard work or cleaning up.  I usually spend 10-12 hours on Sundays grading (that’s in addition to the 50 hour week, by the way), so Saturdays are the only day that’s mine.  Even if I spend the entire day working on something, it’s a break from the overwhelming grind of the week, so I am thankful for this day to get away from education.

Today, for example, I have spent the entire day going back and forth from working on the prototype to doing laundry to burning brush.  The basic frame for the unit is complete, and while it was a lot of work and a lot of trial and error, I couldn’t be happier with it.  The design is sturdy and functional and should be fairly easy to replicate now that I know the basic layout.  In terms of cost, I think it will save us hundreds of dollars over a pre-made system.  There are still many Saturdays worth of work to go before the entire prototype is complete and operational, but I am grateful for this day of the week to pursue my dream of launching this farm.

Saturday Morning Ramblings

When it warms up just a bit, I’m gonna get to work on my first prototype for the farm.  I just ordered a couple of the parts I need, and they should be here within the next couple of weeks.  For now, I’m mostly gonna focus on the frames, and I’m gonna start with a wooden structure because I have a bunch of old boards that need to be put to use.  In the long run, I’ll probably make them out of PVC or some metal, but during the learning process, I’m gonna use materials already in hand.

This should be fun.  The basic shape I have in mind is very simple and straightforward.  All I have to work out are a couple of structural concerns for weight and the downward slope for the shelving.  Once I have those things worked out, it shouldn’t take too long to build.  I’ll try to add an update later today on how it went.  For now, I’m gonna enjoy a second cup of coffee and relax for a few.
