Tuesday Afternoon Ramblings – Thankful #9

Because I didn’t get to post my entry about pride on Sunday, I’m doubling up the thankful entries today to get back on track.

I’m thankful that this is my 200th blog entry.  “The Ramblings of D. A. Adams” began a year and a half ago as a means for me to write about whatever odd ideas popped into my head from time to time.  So far, I feel as if the blog has lived up to that original mission.  Some days I ramble about sports, other days parenting, still others politics, and all the while, there has been no self-censorship on the topics.  If the notion compels me, I write about it.

Along the way, I’ve made some new friends, readers who enjoy the eclectic nature of  “The Ramblings.”  I’ve also managed to piss off a few friends so badly that they deleted me from their Facebook accounts.  To these people, I apologize, not for what I said that might have angered you, but that you took things so personally as to think I was attacking you.  I’m a smartass who likes to mock absurdity, and for the last year and a half, the absurdity business has been a-booming, but it’s never personal.

I’m grateful to have this outlet for my narcissism.  As a novelist, I receive feedback on my writing long after the fact, and I often feel as if I’m writing in a vacuum.  With “The Ramblings,” I often get instant feedback from readers, some good, some bad, but usually pertinent to the topic, and for that I’m grateful.  I enjoy this blog and hope to have the opportunity to continue it for many years to come.  That is, as long as the Fox News Gestapo doesn’t whisk me away to some remote dirt road and beat me to death with tire irons.  As long as that doesn’t happen, I’ll keep on rambling.

Tuesday Morning Ramblings – Thankful #8

I’m thankful for my sense of humor.  Being able to find the humor in difficult situations has seen me through some rough times.  Being able to laugh at myself and recognize the many follies of my own life have provided me a measure of humility that keeps me grounded.  I’m a foolish, silly man, and that’s good to know.

I can make people laugh quite often and use this in the classroom just about every class meeting.  It relaxes students and gets their attention.  The humorous blog entries that I’ve written are some of the most popular ones in “The Ramblings” history, and I often get more feedback on those than any others.  The people who have gotten the subtle jokes in my novels have expressed to me that those jokes made them literally laugh out loud.  While my sense of humor might be a little odd to some, most of my friends and readers appreciate it, and for that, I am grateful.

I enjoy making people smile and laugh.  It lightens the day and eases some of the difficulties of life.  I’m thankful for the ability to spread a little humor and joy in this world.  It’s gratifying to see the humor in life’s many absurdities and in my own foolishness as a person.

Monday Afternoon Ramblings – Thankful #7

I’m thankful to have personal pride.  I don’t mean vanity, which usually is a terrible character flaw, but rather, pride in who I am as a person, what I represent by carrying on the Adams name, and what kind of quality I deliver in the work I produce.  I don’t claim to be perfect, but I strive for perfection in the jobs that I undertake, even if it’s a crappy second job in a pizza place.  Every single day, I attempt to do my very best.  This pride was instilled in me by my father, my grandfather, most of my football coaches, and a handful of teachers, and every day of my life, I am thankful to them for teaching me to find gratification in the quality of work I do.

Somewhere along the way, pride seems to have taken on a negative connotation, which probably has to do with mixing it up with vanity.  Vanity is all about ego and self-grandeur, but pride is more about caring about how others perceive the work you produce.  Our country suffers from a lack of personal pride.  Too often, quantity trumps quality and half-assed is deemed good enough.  We have lost our edge as the world leader, I believe, because too many of us have lost our sense of pride.  We have to start rewarding quality and rejecting shit, and it all starts with pride.  Business owners need to take more pride in the kind of business they run, not just the bottom line but also the impact on people’s lives.  That’s just as important as profits.  Employees need to take more pride in the quality of work they provide for their employers, and consumers need to demand higher quality in what they receive.  If we can re-establish pride, maybe we can stop falling behind the rest of the world in education, which eventually will put us behind in technology, innovation, and leadership.  And it all starts with personal pride.

I am grateful to have pride in myself and my work, and I will make every effort to pass it on to my own sons.
